BIRTHDAY SURPRISES!

I have had a hectic weekend and now feel totally exhausted.  I can't say things went smoothly. I felt so sorry for my sister, who had arranged the weekend of surprises, only to be scuppered by the DLR closing the main railway route that we needed to use, for repairs. Add together that it was Black Friday weekend, the England versus Tonga rugby match was being played and  Little Mix were performing at the O2, our time out and about in the city was somewhat fraught.  Our initial trip from Canary Wharf to Greenwich was supposed to take 15 minutes. It took us an hour and 15 minutes! However, we did manage to get to The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane by the skin of our teeth.

The show she'd booked as a surprise was 42nd Street and it was BRILLIANT!

Beautiful costumes, amazing sets and incredible dancing. We were seated in the Grand Circle which gave us a terrific view of the stage.

I loved the interior of the theatre.

My pics of the interior were poor, there's a surprise, so I took this from the internet.

I was told that on Sunday there would be another surprise and that we would have to be at Canary Wharf by 10am.  My sister and  niece were in cahoots and kept chuckling. I was getting a little worried as all they said was that I would absolutely love it. As we arrived at our destination, my sister ran on ahead, which confused me. I walked into the area she'd entered to find her beaming at me like an idiot. I couldn't see what the surprise was for a second but then looked to my left. There stood my gorgeous girl!  The idea was that she would come to the show, but unfortunately, she had to work.  Bless her, she'd finished work at 2 am and then was up at 7 am to travel down to see me. Of course, I blubbed like an idiot, but it was so good to spend the day with her and my sister and niece. We had lunch at the Brasserie at The Tower and a bit of sight seeing before I had to say goodbye to my girl and she and her cousin headed off to their respective homes.

The transport curse continued on our journey home as our connection was cancelled and we were delayed for two and a half hours at Westbury.  There were about fifty passengers, who were a little less than happy.  We were sure the staff were hiding, because there wasn't anyone around.  Eventually, a railway representative appeared to reassure us that they would be providing a coach to get us to our respective stations. After about an hour, two mini buses turned up from Bristol, that only had 16 seats each.  You had to laugh, it was like a farce. In the end, they had to lay on taxis for everyone. It must have cost a small fortune to get us home. Apparently, the cancellation was due to them not having a driver for the train, probably because the pay wasn't enough!

Despite the travel hiccups, we had glorious weather, which helped.  We all said how much more horrendous it would have been in wet and windy conditions, but did actually laugh most of the time at all the disasters...well, it's the British way after all!

TULIPS,  SOURDOUGH,  MANDALAS...OH, AND SNOW! I cannot believe we are already almost halfway through February.....where did January go for goodness sake? I've been treating myself to tulips, for which I'm a bit of a sucker, with this delicious bunch reminding me of rhubarb and custard sweets f or some reason. My affection for tulips at this time of year stems from the fact that they don't elicit itchy watery eyes and snotty, sniffly noses, symptoms that daffodils do.  Having said that, I have some Tete a Tete in the kitchen that will be coming into flower soon, so better stock up on the tissues. This bunch also called to me.....well, you can't have too many can you? I thought how nice they would look with  some sort of matching doily underneath them and a mandala sprang to mind.  I chose to this pattern one for it's design and colour palette and it proved to be an easy little make. The photo does not show the true colours, quelle suprise, as the ligh
SPRING HAS SPRUNG! Windows and doors have been flung open in the last few days,  to let in the unusually warm air.  I'm breaking out my summer clothing already!  Can't last Mr says, as there is a cold snap coming.... what a happy little soul! We've  moved the bench to the top of the garden again, as the lengthening days mean the sun remains there the longest.  It was still light at 6.00pm yesterday and we made the most of it sitting watching the birds on the feeder,  robins,  great, tufted, blue and long tailed tits, sparrows, when suddenly a sparrow hawk swooped straight across the garden and sadly that was the last of the bird activity, as they all had the sense to stay hidden.  Last year a sparrow hawk did this, again right in front of us, but it took a bird, which although is only nature at its rawest,  was still quite shocking. It's much the same when we walk the dogs, with skylarks swooping about in pairs, performing what I imagine is their courting r
WE ARE NOT AMUSED! Her face says it all! As I mentioned in a previous post, this Bernat dog coat was meant for Pearl, but despite measuring her from collar to the base of her tail, it worked up in a larger size (my tension was off, I guess) and swamped her.  Lucky that she has a slightly larger sister! However, someone was not at all happy with it, refusing to co-operate in my photo shoot.   I was hoping for a canine, Ellie McPherson style strut on the decking, but Elsie was having none of it and flatly refused to look at me. It's quite mild here at the moment but when we have a nice cold snap, she might be more appreciative of it. I have also finished my Nordic Shawl. I've already been wearing it in the evenings, before the fire is lit and it's so warm and cosy.  If you want a lovely warm item of clothing that crochets up really quickly, give this a go. Information and links showing lots of examples are in my previous post.   I ought to block it, as the d
