BATTLING THE BERNAT

Having found the first Bernat dog coat pattern too taxing (couldn't fathom out the leg holes!)  I looked on You Tube for assistance and found a tutorial for another Bernat dog coat pattern, whoopee!  I would happily have paid for a pattern if I could have found one that floated my boat, but nothing took my fancy.  The only ones I liked were being sold as the finished item, but I really want to make my own.

Anyhoo, here is the new one, although I'm not doing stripes as I feel it just looks too blankety.

The tutorial totally helped me to get to grips with the project and I'm almost finished!

I took pictures in order to make it easier if I decide to make another one (my memory for these things is pretty bad).

Those little squares are the leg holes.  I know, they look a bit odd, but there are bands to put around them that will hopefully round them out.

I'm feeling miffed that I frogged back the first coat I attempted, as the You Tube tutorial explained elements of both patterns that I couldn't grasp initially.  The first attempt had a lovely 'crocodile skin' effect, which looked more knitted than crocheted.

While I was in the garden, I spied something red in the greenhouse and found that our chilli plant was still bearing fruit.

We had a few butternut squashes in storage that needed using, so I peeled and chopped them, along with a handful of carrots, some banana shallots, a wrinkly parsnip, a couple of those Dragon chillies and a sprinkle of fresh thyme. I covered the pan with foil and roasted for 30 mins (with a dollop of coconut oil).

I had some frozen chicken stock, which I popped in the Aga to defrost, which it had by the time the veggies were ready. They then went into the stock with a handful of red lentils then back in the oven for another 30 minutes, before being whazzed with a stick blender until smooth.

We ate it with toasted sourdough, which I'd rubbed with a garlic clove before buttering.

I think it needed the fire of a couple more chillies, but was very tasty and satisfying.

I will now settle onto the sofa by the fire, to hopefully finish the dog coat before bedtime!

TULIPS,  SOURDOUGH,  MANDALAS...OH, AND SNOW! I cannot believe we are already almost halfway through February.....where did January go for goodness sake? I've been treating myself to tulips, for which I'm a bit of a sucker, with this delicious bunch reminding me of rhubarb and custard sweets f or some reason. My affection for tulips at this time of year stems from the fact that they don't elicit itchy watery eyes and snotty, sniffly noses, symptoms that daffodils do.  Having said that, I have some Tete a Tete in the kitchen that will be coming into flower soon, so better stock up on the tissues. This bunch also called to me.....well, you can't have too many can you? I thought how nice they would look with  some sort of matching doily underneath them and a mandala sprang to mind.  I chose to this pattern one for it's design and colour palette and it proved to be an easy little make. The photo does not show the true colours, quelle suprise, as...
WE ARE NOT AMUSED! Her face says it all! As I mentioned in a previous post, this Bernat dog coat was meant for Pearl, but despite measuring her from collar to the base of her tail, it worked up in a larger size (my tension was off, I guess) and swamped her.  Lucky that she has a slightly larger sister! However, someone was not at all happy with it, refusing to co-operate in my photo shoot.   I was hoping for a canine, Ellie McPherson style strut on the decking, but Elsie was having none of it and flatly refused to look at me. It's quite mild here at the moment but when we have a nice cold snap, she might be more appreciative of it. I have also finished my Nordic Shawl. I've already been wearing it in the evenings, before the fire is lit and it's so warm and cosy.  If you want a lovely warm item of clothing that crochets up really quickly, give this a go. Information and links showing lots of examples are in my previous post.   I ought to b...
I bought my first bunches of daffs today, as my yellow tulips were shedding their petals. They look like a bunch of green artists brushes at the moment. I love the transparency of the tips, hiding those soon to be, beautiful blooms. Pearl is crashed out in the background after a mammoth walk this morning. So much for good weather today. It started beautifully, then blackened, then rained, then snowed and now we're back to glorious sunshine.  We took our chances and luck was with us on our walk and both dogs are now pooped.  I was quite excited when it started to snow, as it was the first we've seen this winter. I so wished it hadn't rained and the snow had settled for a few hours.  I do suffer from snow envy when I read other blogs and see shots of pure white fairy tale beauty.  Ah well. Valentine's day is looming. I don't know how you feel about it, but over the years, I've come to view it as another consumerist activity that guilts people into spe...
